Tatsuo Amano founded the Company more than sixty years ago, initially selling dyes and industrial chemicals. Later he realized the importance and potential for caramel color as a food color additive.Prior to the war, Mr. Amano invested his own resources to start manufacturing caramel color.
Mr. Amano learned from an American company that a technique had been developed to manufacture powdered milk. With that information, the process was tried on caramel color and Mr. Amano was the first to manufacture powdered caramel color in Japan.

Sakura brand caramel colors are available in high quality and in various classes differing in color strengths and functionality. Many tests have been performed on caramel color from mutagenicity, toxicity and carcinogenicity. The safety of caramel color has been confirmed.
In 1982, the Ministry of Health and Welfare in Japan performed a two year study on mice and rats studying the chronic toxicity and carcinogenicity effects on class caramel color.
This study has been published and no effects of toxicity nor carcinogenicity were observed.
